A Houston man is under arrest on charges of shooting his estranged girlfriend multiple times while in Port Arthur.
Andre Deshawn Smith, 22, was taken into custody in Houston by Port Arthur Police Department investigators and the U.S. Marshal’s office on Thursday — the same day the incident occurred. The victim, whose name is not being released, is a Houston resident and was in Port Arthur visiting relatives in the 2400 block of Julian Drive. The incident happened shortly after midnight.
The suspect, wearing blue sweat pants and a blue hoodie kept his head down obscuring his face while walking out the back of the police station to a waiting squad car to be transported to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility.
PAPD Det. Mike Hebert said that, out of respect for the family of the victim, they are not releasing her name or what hospital she is in for her own protection.
“She is in very critical condition,” Hebert said.
Police are also not saying if anyone else was in the home when the incident occurred but did say that the suspect and victim were not traveling together.
The department does not usually receive assistance on a regular basis with the U.S. Marshal’s office, which specializes in tracking people. This change came about when Tim Duriso became chief of police.
