Newly acquired Seattle Mariners right fielder and first baseman Jay Bruce will be inducted into the Museum of the Gulf Coast Sports Hall of Fame on Jan. 5.
Bruce, originally of Beaumont, was traded from the New York Mets along with four others to the Seattle Mariners for Robinson Cano, Edwin Diaz and $20 million. He’s a three-time major-league all-star (2011, 2012, 2016) who’s spent parts of the past three years with the Mets, part of 2017 with the Cleveland Indians and eight-plus years with the Cincinnati Reds. Bruce, who has 286 career home runs and a .247 career batting average, was traded midseason in 2017 and played a big role in the Indians’ 22-game winning streak. Cleveland was the top seed in the American League playoffs that year, but lost to the New York Yankees in a five-game division series.
Bruce, 31, graduated from West Brook in 2005 and was drafted 12th overall in that season’s MLB draft.
The museum inducted former NBA center Kendrick Perkins of Beaumont and former high school basketball All-American Earl Evans of Port Arthur on Dec. 8.
