GOLF: Landry officially invited to 2019 Masters

Andrew Landry tweeted out during Christmas Day a photo of what he calls a “Pretty awesome Christmas gift today!”

Landry received a formal invitation to compete in the 2019 Masters tournament in Augusta, Georgia. The Masters will become his fourth major, after he placed in top 1 in the 2016 U.S. Open, made the top 50 in the 2018 PGA Championship and missed the cut in the British Open.

Landry earned the Masters Invite by winning the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio on April 22. It is his only PGA Tour title.

That win also earned Landry $1,116,000.

“I didn’t even really think about it, to be honest with you,” Landry said about the rewards after winning. “There’s a lot of perks for a tour win and you’ve just got to continue to stay focused and not think about those kind of things.”

Landry almost had another tour victory last Jan. 20 at the CareerBuilder Challenge in La Quinta, California, but lost to Jon Rahm on the fourth playoff hole.

The first time Landry played in a major, he led through the first round and was ahead in the second before play was suspended due to darkness. He fell a shot behind Dustin Johnson but remained in second place through three rounds, as Shane Lowry took a two-stroke advantage. A tough final round left him tied for 15th.
