WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Barrs earns Southland player of week

FRISCO – For the second time this season, Chastadie Barrs has been named the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by MidSouth Bank, the league announced Thursday.
The LU guard led the Cards to a perfect 2-0 week and notched two triple-doubles. The two wins extended the Cardinals home winning streak to 33 games, the second longest active streak in NCAA Division I women’s basketball.
Early in the second half against Howard Payne, Barrs recorded her 500th career steal. She is one of four players to record 500 or more steals in her career. For the week, Barrs recorded 20 steals and has 515 for her career.
She scored 20 points and collected 12 rebounds to go with her 10 steals against Howard Payne for her first triple-double of the season. Against Howard Payne, she hit a season-high four three-pointers and shot 50 percent from the floor.
Three days later against Pacific, Barrs was at it again as she scored 23 points, on 9-of-17 shooting, collected 10 rebounds and had 10 steals for her second straight triple-double. She also recorded eight assists in the victory.
Her two triple-doubles this season is the second most in the NCAA. For the week, Barrs averaged 21.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 10.0 steals, and 7.0 assists per game.
Prior to the season, Barrs was named to the 2019 Nancy Lieberman Award watch list, which recognizes the Top 20-point guards in the nation.
Barrs and the Cards return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 2, when they host Houston Baptist in Southland Conference action. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Montagne Center. LU will be looking for its 34th straight home victory.
