JUCO BASKETBALL: Apetrei tweets he’ll act as head coach next 2 games

Assistant men’s basketball coach Casey Apetrei announced Sunday on Twitter that he will act as head coach for Lamar State College Port Arthur’s next two games while head coach Lance Madison steps away to attend his mother’s funeral.

The Seahawks will host Lone Star College-Cy Fair at 7 p.m. Tuesday and play at Coastal Bend College in Beeville at 4 p.m. Saturday. The game against Cy Fair is not a Region XIV contest.

“It’s been [a] rough week to say the least,” Apetrei tweeted. “Dropped two close games at home. This next week my boss will be in Indiana for his mother’s funeral. In his absence I will be the head coach for our next two games. Although it isn’t the best of circumstances I am excited about the opportunity I have to get the team back on track. We play at home Tuesday and on the road Saturday. I appreciate all the support and prayers for me in advance.”

Lamar State (13-8, 5-5 in Region XIV) fell into a three-way tie for first place in the region’s South Zone after dropping three of four games. The Seahawks lost to Blinn College 87-82 last Wednesday and to Angelina College 79-75 on Saturday, both at home.
