PREP ROUNDUP: PNG girls earn 20th win, wrap up third place

It took three tries, but Port Neches-Groves finally has its 20th win of the girls basketball season.

Mollee Priddy finished the Indians’ senior night with 23 points, six steals and five assists, and PNG wrapped up third place in District 21-5A with a 57-45 win over Vidor.

PNG (20-12, 8-4 in 21-5A) jumped to a 21-6 lead and built a 33-11 margin by halftime.

Chelsea Carrillo nearly struck a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds; Holly Jones pulled down 11 rebounds to go with six points and five rebounds; and Harlee Barnwell totaled five points and seven rebounds.

PNG’s first playoff game in school history will take place Monday or Tuesday against the District 22-5A runner-up.

 

Bridge City 62, Lumberton 59

In Lumberton, the Cardinals evened their District 22-4A record and picked up a road win in their regular-season finale.

Madison Fischer scored 13 points and Hannah Wiegreffe netted 10 for the Cardinals (22-13, 6-6 in 22-4A), who outscored the Raiders 16-6 in the third quarter to overcome a 37-31 halftime deficit. Ressie Ryder and Caitlin Denison contributed eight points to the win.

Lumberton finished its season 12-22 and 4-8 in the district.

Bridge City and Livingston will face off in the first round of the 4A playoffs at a time and date to be determined.

 

BOYS HOOPS

Vidor 42, PNG 39

The Pirates finally pulled one out in district play, and it kept the Indians (17-13, 5-6 in 21-5A) from securing a playoff berth Tuesday.

Host Vidor (13-14, 1-10) defeated PNG for the first time in three tries this season behind Gavin Jarrell’s 11 points and Hunter Messina’s 10. The Pirates woke up from trailing 9-3 after the first quarter and outscored the Indians 17-9 in the fourth.

Noah Marchak had 14 points and Tracy Smith 11 for PNG, which held on to an 18-15 halftime lead.

PNG, which will have a bye date Friday, can still clinch a playoff berth if Vidor wins at Cleveland. PNG will visit Cleveland next Tuesday in the teams’ regular-season finale.

PNG defeated Cleveland twice this season, but once in district play.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Nederland 6, Vidor 1

In Nederland, Karrie Faith Anders recorded the hat trick, and the Bulldogs (11-1-2, 3-0 in 21-5A) set up a battle of unbeaten teams in district with Port Neches-Groves on Friday.

Meg Sheppard scored twice and Haley Plumley had the other goal. Twenty of Nederland’s 29 shots were on goal.

 

PNG 3, Dayton 0

In Port Neches, Halley Smith connected on the second and third goals, and the Indians (9-3-4, 2-0 in 21-5A) have registered three straight shutouts.

Breeana Riggs scored first off a free kick from Kaylee Landry. The free kick was awarded when Emma Zumo was fouled moving the ball up field.

Riggs assisted on Smith’s first goal, and Abby Reeves assisted the other.

PNG will host Nederland at 7 p.m. Friday.

 

BOYS SOCCER

Nederland 4, Vidor 2

In Vidor, the Bulldogs improved to 10-5-1 and 2-0 in 21-5A with the win. No statistics were available.
