PREP ROUNDUP: Cardinals hold off late Bulldog charge

Bridge City scored in each of the first four innings and held off a furious Nederland rally Friday to take a 5-4 baseball victory after 4 ½ innings at the Bridge City Cardinal Classic.
Each game is held to a 1-hour, 45-minute time limit. Bridge City (3-0) led 4-0 through three innings and scored another run after Nederland posted two in the fourth.
Sam Carpenter and Peyton Havard banged home runs for the Cardinals. Havard and Gavin Green each has two hits, while Cameron Yadon, Slade Foreman, Jackson Tims and Jaxon Bernard each added hits.
The Bulldogs (2-2) scored two more in the fifth.
Brian Davila was 2 for 3 with a double to lead Nederland, with Logan Wright, Samuel Wille and Rene Cunningham also recording hits.
Four Bridge City players took the mound with Slade Foreman getting the most work (three strikeouts and three earned runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings) and picking up the win. Starter Logan Hamm allowed a hit in one inning and struck out one.
Nederland’s Kamden Grant was tagged for five earned runs on seven hits (including the two home runs) and struck out one in the loss. Two more Bulldogs took the mound.
Nederland 6, Orangefield 3
Wade Butler batted 2 for 2 and drove in a run Friday as Nederland won its second straight baseball game, 6-3 over Orangefield, in the Bridge City Cardinal Classic.
Butler also stole a base, as did Landon Hiltz, who also scored a run. Omar Mascorro and Hiltz each had a hit, and Mascorro drove in a run.
Memorial 5, Buna 5 (tie)
In Bridge City, Emmanuel Garcia pitched the distance and allowed four earned runs on five hits, but the Titans (1-1-1) could not break a tie with the Cougars.
Jeremiah Fielder and Johan Nakao each had a hit for Memorial. Adler Kithler recorded a sacrifice fly and drove in two runs.
Memorial will take on Orangefield at 9 a.m. Saturday.
PNG 5, Sulphur 3
At the Sulphur tournament, Carson Roccaforte, Ryan Sosa and Reid Porter each had two hits as the Indians (1-4) earned their first win of the season.
Khristian Curtis recorded seven strikeouts and held the Tornadoes to two earned runs on three hits.
PNG was then shut out 5-0 by Lake Charles Sam Houston despite getting two hits each from Roccaforte and Curtis. Roccaforte struck out eight but allowed five runs (two earned) on eight hits in a complete-game defeat.
SOFTBALL
Nederland 10, Clear Lake 0
In the Clear Creek ISD tournament, Hannah Grumbles homered and Lexi Eversole and Harlee Brown batted 3 for 3 each in Nederland’s blanking of Clear Lake.
In fact, all 10 of Nederland’s runs came in the first inning. Grumbles drove in three runs; Alyssa Collazo and Eversole drove in two each.
Destini Trahan, Grumbles and Collazo each had two hits. In the circle, Trahan struck out six and walked three for the win.
Nederland (8-4) has won three in a row. Brown batted in three runs and Trahan threw 12 strikeouts earlier Friday in a 7-2 victory over Dickinson.
PNG 10, GCM 4, 3 inn.
In the Crosby tournament, Bayja Newby went 3 for 3 (two doubles) with four RBI and Kasidee Sartin drove in three runs on one hit in leading the Indians (8-2) past Goose Creek Memorial.
Sadie Shrestha, Sydnee Adams, Maylin Louvier and Abbie Romero each scored twice for PNG. Shrestha went 2 for 3, and Taylor Dominguez, Romero and Sartin (double) accounted for the other hits.
Phoebe Borne walked two and gave up four earned runs on five hits in the three-inning win.
Bridge City 9, West Orange-Stark 0, 5 inn.
In this non-district meeting of District 22-4A opponents in Orangefield, Abby Anderson hammered two hits and scored two runs in leading the Cardinals (6-4-1) to their third straight victory.
The Cardinals backed up Courtney Ball, who struck out six in four innings.
BOYS SOCCER
Memorial 0 (5), Nederland 0 (4)
Memorial needed a shootout to pick up a District 21-5A victory over Nederland on Friday. No further details were available.
GIRLS SOCCER
Nederland 6, Memorial 1
In Nederland, Meg Sheppard pulled off a hat trick for the third match in a row, and the Bulldogs (15-1-2, 7-0 in 21-5A) remained unbeaten in the district with a rout of the Lady Titans.
Brynn Landry, Hanna Foster and Jordan Minaldi also scored for the Bulldogs.
