GOLF: Landry, Stroud struggle, miss Valero cut

Andrew Landry’s title defense in the Valero Texas Open ended prematurely on Friday. So did Chris Stroud’s bid for another top 10 finish.
Neither of the Port Neches-Groves exes showed up with their best stuff and the result was an early exit for both on the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio.
Landry, a year after shooting four consecutive rounds in the 60s, added a 74 to a first-day 71 for a 36-hole total of 145. That left him two shots over the 143 number to stick around for the weekend.
Stroud, who was tied for second place headed to the 18th hole on Thursday, and still in great shape at the turn on Friday, collapsed on the back nine. Five consecutive bogeys left him at 76 for 144, a shot off the cut line.
Si Woo Kim, boosted by a hole in one at 16, was the runaway leader at the halfway mark. A second consecutive 66 left him at 132, four shots ahead of a quartet of players that included Jordan Spieth.
Landry at least has the consolation of packing and heading to Augusta, Georgia, to play in his first Masters next week. Stroud will head back to Houston trying to figure out how to get his driver until control.
While Landry really never got untracked, Stroud closed out his first nine holes with back-to-back birdies to sit five-under for the tournament. He was still minus five when the bogey barrage began on the par 4, fourth. Stroud didn’t make another par until his final hole.
Most of his problems came from an errant driver. He would hit only five of 13 fairways, with many of the misses leaving him in trouble. He also found too many greenside bunkers, landing in five and converting only twice.
Landry’s issue was poor putting and erratic iron play after getting the ball in the fairway. The 2018 Valero champ was No. 1 in the field in driving accuracy (23-of-28 fairways hit), but was 122 in strokes gained approach and 130 in strokes gained putting.
He posted four bogeys against two birdies and was never under par during his second round. He managed only four birdies for the week and was 0-for-7 on par 5s until hitting the 14th green in two and two-putting.
