Former West Orange-Stark quarterback Jack Dallas struck out two in four innings, but LSU tagged the sophomore for three earned runs in the second inning for an early lead and held on to defeat Lamar 5-3 on Tuesday before 10,364 at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge.

Dallas (0-5), also a Lamar quarterback, allowed three hits in the loss, as four other Cardinals took the mound to try and slow down the nation’s ninth-ranked baseball team. Dylan Johnson had the most success of all the Lamar pitchers, striking out three in 1 1/3 innings.

A three-run home run by Drew Bianco put the 3-spot on the board for the Tigers (27-15).

Robin Adames put Lamar (14-27) on the board with a leadoff homer in the fifth, but LSU responded later that inning with two RBI flyouts. Cole Coker hit a one-run single in the sixth, and Anthony Quirion took a bases-loaded walk with two outs to narrow the gap to 5-3.

Starter Landon Marceaux (2-2) took the win after holding Lamar scoreless through three innings. Devin Fontentot, the Tigers’ seventh pitcher of the evening, earned his fourth save of the year.

The Cardinals will visit New Orleans for a three-game Southland Conference set starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
