Savannah Moore of Nederland High School and Jake Plante of Port Neches-Groves High School received Mid-Jefferson County Retired School Personnel scholarships.

The scholarship program began in 2017 with the support of local businesses, who provide the majority of the funding, and donations from members of the local unit of the Texas Retired Teachers Association.

Plante plans to attend Lamar University and earn three degrees: chemical engineering, business and Spanish. He has participated in Lamar’s Intro to Engineering Program.

In high school Plante was a member of the football, tennis, swimming and fishing teams. An honor student, he is a member of the National Honor Society and belongs to Key Club.

In addition, Student Council, G-Crew and Indians Give, among other activities, have kept him active on campus. He has also contributed during Riverfest, Hurricane Harvey clean-up, the Beaumont Children’s Museum and other places and events, amassing approximately 975 service hours.

After graduating from Nederland High School, Moore plans to enroll at Texas A&M University in College Station to pursue a degree in kinesiology on her way to becoming a pediatric physical therapist.

Moore has been active in school, community and church activities throughout her high school years. She has been especially involved in the high school band, serving on the band council and the honors band, eventually as co-head twirler and drum major.

She belongs to the National Honor Society, Terrific Nederland Teens and Spanish Honor Society. She also volunteers at her church and the local public library, and also during Hurricane Harvey recovery.
