Local Girl Scout Troops joined together recently to honor deceased veterans on National Wreaths Across America Day.
Andrea Cormier, leader of Troop 130337, was joined by Troops 130407 and 6484 as part of the Golden Coast Girl Scout Community the event at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches.
In her speech, Cormier said she became aware of Wreaths Across America through another Girl Scout volunteer, saying many of the girls in the troop have close relationships to the military.
“I believed that letting the girls participate in WWA would be a great opportunity for them to get involved and be of service to their community and honor those members of their families,” Cormier said.
She also hoped this would serve as a reminder that all Veterans, those who are still with us today and those who are not, and the active service members deserve to be recognized and remembered for their dedication to the United States.
Last year Troop 130337 was so impacted the girls voted to donate $500 earned from their Girl Scout cookie sales to sponsor wreaths for the ceremony.
Margaret Blitch, a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution, Capt. William Sanders Chapter of Port Arthur, provided the information from the Girl Scout group having been a part of the wreath ceremony.
The Daughters of the American Revolution, Capt. William Sanders Chapter of Port Arthur collected sponsorships for the purchase of the wreaths that were placed on the graves of veterans.
