A one-and-a-half year-old child died and her mother seriously injured when they were ejected during a crash Friday.

Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett said the child, identified as Elaya Washington, was pronounced deceased at a hospital. The mother of the child was transported via medical helicopter to UTMB in Galveston.

The medical condition of the mother was not immediately available Monday afternoon.

Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Duriso said the crash happened in the 300 block of Texas 73 just before 7 p.m. Duriso said the crash appeared to involve one vehicle — a Lincoln SUV, with at least six people inside. The occupants of the vehicle were family members.

The medical condition of the mother was not immediately available Monday afternoon.

Family members told Burnett that the driver of the vehicle lost control and the car rolled over ejecting the mother and child. The vehicle then landed on the two, he was told.

The crash is under investigation by the Port Arthur Police Department.
