Family mourns as police search for killer

A local family is preparing to lay their loved one to rest while police continue to search for the person responsible for her death.

Donesha Buckner died from a gunshot wound Jan. 18 at Normandy Apartments. The circumstances of the killing are still being investigated. Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Dusiro said officers are following leads and talking to people. 

No arrests have been made in the 33-year-old woman’s death almost a month later. Police have not released much information other than the basics and to say the death is due to foul play.

Buckner was rushed from Normandy Apartments to The Medical Center of Southeast Texas Jan. 18 after a call  regarding a person with a medical issue. Doctors were unsuccessful to save Buckner and she died. Not long after several detectives and the doctor came in and told her situation had changed — as staff was undressing Buckner to have her ready for the coroner they found a gunshot wound, Sharon Shelvin, Buckner’s mother, said.

Duriso said the incident was initially reported as a medical crisis as there was no evidence of anything else until they got to the hospital. That’s when they realized her death was due to foul play.

Police have several suspects and are actively investigating the case, he said. 

Visitation for Buckner will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday atStrong Tower Ministries, 5100 25th St. with funeral at 10 a.m.

Buckner leaves behind a long time fiance six children and numerous other family members and loved ones.
