Former Memorial High School star and 2022-23 KIA NBA G League Rookie of the Year Kenneth Lofton Jr. has found a new NBA home.
The Philadelphia 76ers announced Dec. 23 that “Junior” had been signed to a two-contract.
The contract designation allows players to be on the rosters of an NBA team and its G League affiliate at the same time. NBA teams can have up to three players on this type of contract.
The 76ers G League affiliate squad is the Delaware Blue Coats.
Lofton made his presence felt in the Blue Coats’ first game of the season Wednesday, scoring a team high 30 points in a 134-126 victory over the Capital City Go-Go at Chase Fieldhouse in Wilmington, Delaware.
“He’s an extremely talented player, very high IQ,” head coach Mike Longabardi said in reference to Lofton according to gleague.nba.com.
“We’re extremely happy to have him. For the first game, I thought that he exceeded all of our expectations.”
Up next for Lofton and the Blue Coats is a matchup with the Rip City Remix on Saturday (Dec. 30) at Chiles Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Lofton made a name for himself in professional basketball last season as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies’ G League affiliate.
In 17 appearances in 2022-23 in the regular season, Lofton averaged 20.2 points per game, 10.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.2 steals.
Lofton scored 20+ points in eight games and 30+ points twice, including a career-high 33 points against Delaware on Feb. 3, 2022.
Lofton secured the first triple-double of his career on Feb. 7, 2022, against Birmingham, finishing with 20 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists. He notched nine double-doubles throughout the regular season.
He was named to the 2023 Jordan Rising Stars as a member of the NBA G League team and also participated in the NBA G League NEXT Up game on Feb. 19, 2022.
Undrafted out of Louisiana Tech in the 2022 NBA Draft, Lofton signed a two-way contract with the Memphis Grizzlies on July 2, 2022.
Lofton began the 2023-24 NBA season on the Grizzlies roster and played in 15 games, scoring 2.6 points per game over 6.6 minutes per game.
The Grizzlies waived Lofton Dec. 18 to make room for the return of star guard Ja Morant, who had been suspended since the start of the season.
