NEDERLAND — Years have passed since Frank Sinatra told the world he did it “My Way,” and now local singer Hunter Courts is looking to pay homage to the crooner in an upcoming competition.
Courts is one of 12 contestants chosen for the Hoboken My Way Sinatra Sing-Off June 20 at Sinatra Park Amphitheater in New Jersey.
“The My Way Sinatra Sing-Off is a longstanding and sought-after singing contest in Hoboken that attracts Frank Sinatra performers from all over the world. Since 2007, this revered event has been hosted outdoors along the Hoboken waterfront framed by the New York City skyline,” according to the Hoboken Historical Museum.
Contestants will sing their favorite Sinatra song in front of a panel of judges and the public, and the winner will earn the title of Best Sinatra Style singer.
Courts, who is a Port Neches-Groves High School graduate and Nederland resident, has been singing professionally since graduation in 2015. Prior to that he took part in school productions and performed with Port Arthur Little Theater.
Courts said friend Rickey Davis won the competition in 2019 and suggested he try out for it.
Courts currently performs locally and has been for some time. You can catch him at The Pompano in Port Neches, Bruno’s Italian Kitchen in Beaumont, Tia Juanita’s in Port Arthur and other businesses. He also performs at private events, parties and weddings.
He recently performed with The Golden Triangle Big Band and a Big Band in Houston.
You can also catch his performance at Port Arthur’s upcoming 4th of July Celebration at the Carl Parker Center.
The singer is excited about seeing New Jersey and New York.
As for the future, Courts would like to perform at bigger venues such as Las Vegas and New York and possibly touring the U.S., he said.
