Port Arthur and surrounding communities are bracing for heavy rains on Thursday as a potential tropical cyclone tracks into Mexico.

According to the National Weather Service, Potential Tropical Cyclone #1 has developed in the southwest Gulf of Mexico and is on track to make landfall about midnight Thursday in Mexico.

A coastal flood watch was issued through Wednesday night, along with a small craft advisory.

Temps will drop for a high of about 99 degrees on Wednesday with the potential for storms beginning Wednesday night.

The weather service is forecasting no direct impact to Southeast Texas, but warns indirect impacts from heavy downpours, coastal flooding and hazardous seas in southeast Texas and southern Louisiana.

The forecast already has impacted local events, prompting the City of Port Arthur to postpone its Hurricane Preparedness Workshop scheduled for June 18 to an undetermined future date.

The workshop is designed to help educate the community on planned disaster strategies for families, specifically as relates to preparation for evacuations.
