Edward James Sylvester also known as “Baby James”, was born January 19, 1937 in Crowley, Louisiana to the late Joseph and Rena Sylvester.

“Baby James” attended Ross High School and later enlisted in the United States Armed Forces. He moved to Port Arthur, Texas at the end of his enlistment and opened a mechanic shop. He continued to work as a mechanic until he began his employment with the City of Port Arthur. He met Sarah, the love of his life, in 2002. They were united in holy matrimony May 16, 2009. He retired from the City of Port Arthur in June of 2009.

“Baby James” never met a stranger. His kind heart and sweet spirit made him the type of person everyone wanted to be around. He loved celebrating life and enjoyed his time with family.

Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather was called home to glory Monday, November 4, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Rena Sylvester; his sister, Rena Theresa Sylvester; and his brother, Joseph Sylvester.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Sarah Sylvester; sister, Norma Mitchell of Houston, Texas; two (2) daughters, Edwina Sylvester and Shanice Edwards both of Port Arthur, Texas; four sons (4) Willie (Ashley) Wallace of Bryan College Station, Texas, Juston (Cleo) Edwards of San Antonio, Texas, Steven (Anitral) Edwards and Earl (Jasemine) Edwards both of Port Arthur, Texas; ten grandchildren, Alisha, Alinza’, Ahmad, Armani’, Zaria, Shaniya, Earl Jr., Riyad, Eliana, and Elicia; and (2) great-grandchildren, Timothy Jr. and Ahlora; one (1) godchild, Gloria McCullough, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and special friends.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 22, 2024 at St. James Catholic Church, 3617 Gulfway Drive, Port Arthur, Texas with visitation from 9 a.m. until service time. Burial will be Monday, November 25, 2024 at Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
