Life in the fast lane: Nation’s fastest relay team out to ‘build dynasty’

HUMBLE — Kary Vincent Jr. was not going to let a little dizziness ruin his birthday at the Sam Mosley Relays.

Vincent shook off the illness and was a part of two first-place relay squads for the Port Arthur Memorial Titans Saturday. The defending state champion 4×100 relay team of DeAndre Angelle, Quantae Connor, Kameron Martin and Vincent set the tone early with a winning time of 41.72 seconds, just under the squad’s national best time of 41.63 set at the Bulldog Relays in Nederland.

There really was no catching the Titans in this race and might not be for a very long time.

Langham Creek finished second with a time of 42.34 and Central came in second at 42.43.

Angelle has the speed to separate early and Connor does to set up the final two legs.

By the time Martin hands the baton to Vincent, the race is already in the bag.

“I am real proud of this team,” Martin said. “This is something we have been working on and we are trying to build a dynasty here.”

Vincent was noticeably ill between the two relays and was especially shaken after the finish of the 4×200.

The Titans won that race with a time of 1:28.07. Memorial ran a 1:27.31 last week in Nederland. Jaquan Francois started the race before handing to Vincent. Angelle finished the race, just ahead of the Central team that finished at 1:28.25.

Vincent fought off the sickness, he said, because he could not let his team down.

“It is not hard,” Vincent said. “I know my teammates are counting on me to finish this race and give it everything I have. It goes away during the short time I was running. I didn’t feel any pain but I am getting it right now.”

One of the unsung heroes so far this track season has been Angelle. His speed out of the first block has been big for the Titans who seem to be getting off to quicker starts in the relays than last season.

Angelle was not on the first leg of the relays to start the season at the Wolverine Relays in Clear Brook. He said he had hip problems and is since feeling a lot better.

“We practice and work hard 24/7,” Angelle said. “That first leg is very important. I have to have the lead for my team. I would be very surprised if we don’t finish first in that 4×100. We are going to win state there. Positive.”

Angelle also took home a third-place medal, this one in the 100-meter dash. Angelle’s 11.40 was just behind teammate Marcus Younger’s 11.31, which was second. Langham Creek’s Toriel Carter won the event with a time of 11.20.

All in all, it was another solid day for the Titans and their birthday boy Vincent, who treated his gold medals like gifts.

“It is a great feeling,” Vincent said. “I couldn’t ask for anything more than enjoying the presents with my teammates. If they are happy, I am happy. I wouldn’t accept any silver today.”

The competition gets even bigger next Saturday when the Titans compete in the C.L. Hanna Relays in Dickinson. The relays will include last year’s Class 6A state champion Manvel and Pearland Dawson.
