Antiques, clothing and more in new Groves businesses

GROVES —The site of a former insurance agency is now home to two new businesses in Groves.
Boots and Bluebonnets and Pewter Creek clothier and designs, 3570 Main Ave., feature everything from antiques and collectibles, art deco, Texas collectibles, name brand fashions, name brand jewelry, furniture and more.
Daniel Kay, owner of Boots and Bluebonnets, works alongside Pat Cooper while Cooper’s daughter, Kimberly Smith, and her son, Jacob Smith, run Pewter Creek.
The eclectic shop features several rooms of items to choose from. The front room features some furniture and decorative items and Park Lane brand jewelry. Another room features Montana West brand shoes and purses, clothing and more.
Kay walked down a hallway to a dimly lit room featuring more masculine items.

“This room has my influence,” Kay said as he clicked on the main lights in what he jokingly deemed a man’s cave. “When you think of antiques you usually think of what women would buy but I want you to know there are items for men too.”
A wooden chest emblazoned with the Texas star was handmade by Kay himself and can be used as a blanket chest or a coffee table. Elsewhere there are wooden duck decoys, furniture and rustic items. One wall features work by Port Neches artist Leslie Van Hess.

Cooper, who is manager of one portion of the shop, has long been a fan of antiquing.
“I just enjoy it,” Cooper said. “It’s a hobby for me.”

Smith, who has owned an interior design store in Central Texas, said she learned her style from her mother.
“I’ve always had a passion for fashion,” Smith said. “We have fun clothing from casual to cocktail and men’s clothing.”
Smith said his son Jacob Smith is a student at Louisiana State University and gives insight into what male college students are looking for in fashion and serves as the shop’s merchandiser.

Kay doesn’t believe in competition in an area where antique shops are plentiful.
“I don’t believe in competition with other antique stores,” he said. “The more people we can get to Groves, the better and if everyone passes on customers to other stores it’s better for the community.”
When someone walks into his store he’s happy to tell them about other nearby shops, he said.
Boots and Bluebonnets and Pewter Creek are currently open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
