Fabulous 50: PA Memorial piles on points in final prep

The Port Arthur Memorial Titans look ready for next Saturday.
Memorial exploded for 50 points in a scrimmage against the Goose Creek Memorial Patriots in the final tune-up for next Saturday’s regular season opener against Bay High of Panama City, Fla. That game takes place at 7 p.m. at the Thomas Center in Beaumont.
First, the Titans completely took care of the Patriots in all facets of the scrimmage of a 50-0 win.
Memorial scored on long plays, including junior running back Elijah Hines’ 43-yard run on its first play from scrimmage.
The Titans scored on short plays, which included quarterback Kadon Harrison’s 3-yard score.
Hines added a four-yard run and senior receiver De’Andre Angelle scooted into the end zone from 62 yards out on a run.
The Titans’ defense was busy shutting out the Patriots, while the offense was racking up scores in a scrimmage that lasted only two quarters of live action.
This was the first shutout for a Memorial team in any type of game or scrimmage since the regular season opener in 2014, a 56-0 blanking of Ozen.
“I feel pretty good,” Memorial coach Kenny Harrison said when asked how he felt about his team after two scrimmages. “We still have a lot of things we have to correct and clean up. We have a long ways to go, but I feel good about the kids and the coaching staff that we have. We will get there.”
Memorial started the scrimmage by getting Goose Creek to go three-and-out. Hines then took the Titans’ first snap 43 yards for a touchdown.
The next Titans series ended with Adrian Williams catching a 35-yard touchdown pass from Kadon Harrison to put the Titans up 14-0 with 1:40 left in the first quarter. Hines, later in the quarter, scored again, this time from 4 yards out. Keitha Jones scored on a two-point conversion and Memorial went up 22-0 with seconds left in the first.
“He [Hines] is an explosive young man,” Harrison said. “He last year unfortunately did not get the reps last year because he played behind Kameron Martin and Marcus Younger. We always knew he was going to be an exciting player for us.”
Coach Harrison took most of the offensive starters out the game before Kobi Martin, little brother of Memorial great and current Auburn freshman Kameron Martin, scored on a 3 yard run to give Memorial a 36-0 lead.
Goose Creek then fumbled the ball away, and the Titans took advantage of the turnover. Harrison scored on a quarterback keeper to give Memorial a 43-0 lead with 2:13 left in the game.
The woes continued for Goose Creek who fumbled the ball on the ensuing kickoff.
“The shutout is a good deal,” Harrison said. “Our defense takes pride in making our opponents earn every yard. We have good kids on defense and a great staff. They made some mental mistakes on that side of the ball and hopefully we can learn from those.”
Greg LeDay scored the Titans’ final touchdown.
Now Harrison and his Titans can start to focus on a team they know little about.
“We only have one film on those guys (Bay High),” Harrison said. “We might have to do some adjustments on the fly next Saturday, but I am confident in my coaching staff to make the right calls.”
