Nederland coach Larry Neumann confirmed Wednesday school officials are waiting to hear from the UIL on the possibility of the Bulldogs playing an ineligible player this past Friday against Livingston.

The player in question is quarterback and Port Arthur Memorial transfer Kevin Laday.

“We received information from the UIL and our principal Dr. (Steven) Beagle Tuesday to notify us that further information was needed on Kevin Laday’s Previous Athletic Participation form,” Neumann said. “We are in the process of forwarding that and providing that to the UIL. Until that is completed and a decision is made on his eligibility, he will not participate in any games moving forward. He is still currently with the team in a practice capacity.”

Neumann would not go into further details about what might have caused the UIL to look into Laday’s eligibility. He transferred to Nederland from Memorial before the start of fall practice.

He got the start against Livingston last Friday and threw for 140 yards on 10-of-16 passing with two interceptions and he scored on a 9-yard touchdown run. Nederland won 51-9 in the District 22-5A opener.

Laday played the second half two weeks ago in a non-district loss to Dayton.

The Bulldogs must wait for the UIL’s decision to learn if Nederland must forfeit the win over the Lions.

Sophomore Blaysin Fernandez will start this Friday when the Bulldogs travel to face Baytown Lee at Stallworth Stadium, according to Neumann. If Fernandez does start against Lee, he will be the third starting quarterback of the season for the Bulldogs.

“The next man up mentality is alive and good in Nederland,” Neumann said. “We are using that extensively. Right now we are acquiring information. I don’t dare try to judge what the UIL will consider in their final decision. We would like to facilitate it as soon as possible for obvious reasons. I know Dr. Beagle has informed the district executive committee about what we are doing. We are in pursuit of that right now. I will stay away from any specifics until we get a final resolution.”
