PA man charged with stealing car, fleeing from BPD

BEAUMONT — A Port Arthur man is charged with stealing a car and fleeing from Beaumont police on Sunday morning.

An officer stopped a 2006 Chevrolet Impala around 9:40 a.m. Sunday at Newfield and South Major Drive for speeding on College Street.

The driver gave a fake name and when the officer approached the car again, the driver took off, according to a press release from the Beaumont Police Department.

The driver fled to Landis and then to an alleyway behind the 9200 block of Mapes where he abandoned the car and ran Officers found him behind a house in the 9400 block of Landis.

He was taken into custody and identified as Milton Joe Harris, 26, of Port Arthur.

Police believe Harris had taken the car from an address on Mapes Street while the owner was asleep. The owner f the car filed unauthorized use of a motor vehicle charges.

Harris was brought to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility where he was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading detention with a motor vehicle, fail to identify and traffic warrants.
