Nobody’s homecoming: Memorial landslide largest in its history

BEAUMONT — The Port Arthur Memorial Titans celebrated homecoming Saturday afternoon. The weird part was the game was at the Thomas Center and a home game for the Ozen Panthers.

The Titans didn’t just celebrate; they dominated. Ozen was held to 68 yards of offense while Memorial put up 406 in a 62-0 shutout.

It is the first Memorial shutout since a 56-0 win over Ozen to start the 2014 season, the largest margin of victory in Titans history (since 2002) and ninth shutout.

Senior quarterback Kadon Harrison finished with six passing touchdowns and one rushing. Harrison had 269 yards on 16-of-23 passing and threw touchdown passes to five different receivers.

He scored on a 14-yard run early in the fourth quarter to put the Titans (3-0, 2-0 in 22-5A) ahead 55-0.

Harrison threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Hines, a 56-yarder to Adrian Williams and a 25-yard touchdown strike to De’Andre Angelle all in the first quarter.

“We definitely felt disrespected by the homecoming,” coach Kenny Harrison said about Ozen holding homecoming. “I have been a head coach here for seven years and the work that we have put in, I worked too much to be someone’s homecoming. We definitely felt disrespected.”

And it showed.

Memorial never let off the gas against the Panthers (1-3, 1-2). The Titans were up 21-0 at the break after going nowhere on offense in the second quarter.

Memorial’s defense did not allow Ozen to cross midfield until the 7:09 mark in the second quarter. The Panthers only lasted two plays on the Titans’ side of the field after back-to-back negative plays.

Kary Vincent Jr. added his third interception in as many games. Kobi Martin, brother of Auburn freshman and Memorial graduate Kameron Martin, scored four plays later from 11 yards out to put Memorial up 41-0 with 9:57 left in the third quarter.

“We have young guys on our defense stepping up,” Vincent said. “We came in with a chip on our shoulder from last year when Ozen came over and beat us 31-30. It was an emotional game for us.

“Last year was on our mind. There were some other things going on that will go unsaid. The captains sat down with our coaches and said we would come in and dominate and not let up.That is what we did.”

Javontae’ Hopkins also had an interception for the Titans, who limited the Panthers to six first downs, minus-1 rushing yard and two fumbles for a total of four turnovers.

Torello Atkins, Odis Mack, Braydon Williams and Stephfan Lorthridge all had sacks for Memorial and Jomard Valsin had the first fumble recovery of the day.

Ozen had minus-12 yards at the half, minus-21 rushing yards and nine passing yards.

The Titans were so dominant, they at one point scored two touchdowns in 9 seconds.
Memorial, on the first play of the second half, got a 56-yard touchdown reception by Angelle from Harrison to go up 28-0 with 11:41 left in the third. Ozen fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Memorial’s Dylan Smith came away with the recovery.

Rickey Thomas then caught a 16-yard touchdown throw from Harrison to give the Titans a 35-0 lead with 11:30 left in the third.

Martin’s score came with 9:57 left in the third, and the rout was on.

“Our receivers made plays today,” Kadon Harrison said. “It was not all me. It was the offensive line, our receivers and the running backs. Everyone did good today.”

Memorial’s next game is at 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium against Nederland. The Bulldogs are coming off a 29-28 overtime loss to Vidor.
