NEDERLAND — The former site of the International Safety Training Council in Nederland will soon have new owners — Newtron Beaumont LLC.

The electrical and instrumentation construction/maintenance business received a $100,000 incentive from the Nederland Economic Development Corporation recently that will enable it to move to 324 N. Memorial Freeway in Nederland from Industrial Park Drive just outside of Nederland city limits.

“There are two building there they’re going to purchase as well as a massive parking lot,” Kay DeCuir, executive director of the NEDC said. “They’re going from there (Industrial Park Drive) to this new location and will start another company on that property and build new warehouses.”

DeCuir said the business owners would employ a minimum of 860 employees.

The ISTC business was a nonprofit thus not on the property tax rolls. Now, with new owners to the buildings, the property will move back to the tax rolls making it a benefit to the city and to the Nederland Independent School District.

Although approved by the NEDC, the Nederland City Council has final approval on the subject. It is tentatively scheduled to be on council’s Oct. 10 agenda.

“Newtron coming to Nederland is great,” Nederland City Manager Chris Duque said. “The city will have direct and indirect benefits to the business community and community as a whole.”

DeCuir said the reasons that Newtron was approved by the NEDC board is because the property will be back on the tax roll, the business is expanding and because of job creation.

If approved by city council, NEDC would monitor the business for one year per contract stipulations.
