The Nederland Bulldogs on Friday would have liked to do without the distraction from rumors that they will have to forfeit their first district victory over Livingston for using an ineligible player.

District 22-5A executive committee chairman Travis Maines of Vidor confirmed a meeting will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday to discuss the matter. The University Interscholastic League and Nederland coach Larry Neumann confirmed Friday a parent residence waiver the school put in for Kevin Laday, who transferred from Port Arthur Memorial, was denied. Memorial beat Nederland 42-12 on Friday.

UIL media coordinator Kate Hector told The News the penalty for the denial is the forfeiture of any game he played, but that decision goes to the committee instead of the state’s governing body for high school activities.

Laday played in a 24-23 non-district loss to Dayton and started in a 51-9 district win over Livingston.

Neumann said he’ll wait until Wednesday’s decision to decide whether Nederland will appeal any decision against the school.

Memorial coach Kenny Harrison said he had no thoughts about the controversy surrounding Laday and the Bulldogs.

“My thoughts are with our kids here at Memorial,” Harrison said. “My focus is making sure my kids are ready to go.”
