Ned, PNG to play for top seed Friday

The Nederland vs. Port Neches-Groves volleyball series for 2016 is not over.

The two teams will play a third match this season to determine the top seed out of District 22-5A for the upcoming 5A playoffs at 6 p.m. Friday at PNG. Both teams finished 13-1 in district play and traded their only defeats.

Nederland won the most recent meeting at PNG in four sets on Oct. 11. PNG won the first match in five games at Nederland on Sept. 16.

The Mid-County rivals wrapped up their shares of the 22-5A championship Tuesday night. Nederland swept Port Arthur Memorial, while PNG beat Livingston in three sets.

Sabine Pass finished fourth in District 23-2A to qualify for the playoffs. The Sharks will take on Groveton at 6:30 p.m. this coming Tuesday at Spurger. Coach Andie Myers said it will be the Sharks’ first playoff appearance in at least four seasons.

Memorial and Bob Hope did not qualify for the playoffs.

Our of Orange County, Bridge City will take on Huntington in the 4A bi-district round at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kirbyville. Little Cypress-Mauriceville and Silsbee shared the district title in 22-3A and will have a playoff for that top seed.
