PNG wins top seed after 5-set thriller

The Port Neches-Groves Rock-A-Noos will represent District 22-5A as the top seed in the playoffs after a five-set victory over Nederland on Friday.
PNG and Nederland finished with identical 13-1 district records and needed a tiebreaker to settle playoff positions after sharing the district championship. The Rock-A-Noos won the match 25-23, 25-11, 16-25, 23-25 and 15-11.
PNG now faces Conroe Caney Creek at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Crosby High School. It was not known who Nederland faces as of Friday night.
For PNG, Rachel Hammersmith had 27 service points, 18 digs and 23 assists Friday while Kaitlyn Gil added 16 points, 11 digs, 10 kills and three blocks. Kailey Oliver finished with 15 points and four blocks and Libbie LeJeune added 19 points, 17 digs, 12 kills and two blocks.
Baylee Priddy finished with 21 assists and seven digs, Bayja Newby had 24 digs, Hannah Jones had 10 digs, nine kills and two blocks, Cheyanne Orozco added 16 kills and Elizabeth Bolyard put in eight kills and two blocks.
