NEDERLAND — Eighth-grader Kerrington Broussard will stay rather busy shortly after Christmas.
Broussard, a wide receiver for C.O. Wilson Middle School this season, has been invited to the Dallas area to participate in the Bret Cooper All-American Bowl and Combine. The activities include practices and a game at Beverly D. Humphrey Tiger Stadium in Lancaster and a chance to stand on the sideline during the Jan. 2 Cotton Bowl between Western Michigan and Wisconsin.
“I think I’m blessed to be invited to this event, grateful and blessed by God,” he said, adding he’s never been to AT&T Stadium.
Broussard is among 60 players chosen from a pool of more than 30,000 players viewed for the game, according to his acceptance letter from Cooper. He was chosen based on his academic and football skills.
“I think it’s pretty neat,” C.O. Wilson coach Chris Smith said. “It’s the first time I think we’ve had anyone qualify for it. … We thought it was a good opportunity.”
Broussard’s mother, Nicole Frelow, said her son has been exposed a little more to different positions and enjoys the school and coaching staff.
“He’s a very coachable kid,” Smith said. “He works real hard. ‘Yes sir, no sir’ type of kid and gives his all on the field. I can see why they like him.”
Broussard already has his sights set on playing at the collegiate level, dreaming of a chance to play at either Houston, LSU or Miami.
He will report to Dallas Jan. 28 and stay until Jan. 4.
