• About the game: First, how about the standings? The teams least favored to win the Southland championship are among the conference leaders. New Orleans, predicted to finish ninth, is first at 4-0, followed by Houston Baptist (preseason No. 5) at 3-1, and a three-way tie among Lamar (No. 12), Nicholls State (No. 13) and Central Arkansas (No. 11) each at 2-1. … Lamar is 7-1 at home and has won five of its last six following Saturday’s 20-point win over Southeastern Louisiana. Now, those Cardinals are facing a San Antonio flock of Cardinals who are next to last in the standings. UIW shoots the ball well from the field (45 percent) and from three-point range (37 percent), but Lamar leads the Southland in scoring offense (79.5 ppg). Tonight is the last of a three-game homestand for the Cardinals, who will spend the next three games on the road starting with Saturday’s visit to Abilene Christian. … Lamar’s women’s team will host UIW at 7 p.m. Thursday. — I.C.
