NJCAA hails Comeaux, but Seahawks lose

BOSSIER CITY, La. — If only winning a national award counted as a victory on the court, Lamar State College Port Arthur would have two things to celebrate Wednesday night.
The NJCAA earlier in the day awarded freshman guard John Comeaux its Division I player of the week award, in honor of the Ozen graduate’s 47 points against Panola College last Friday.
He’s followed that performance with 20 points against Paris Junior College on Monday and 29 against Bossier Parish Community College on Wednesday. But both have resulted in defeats.
LSCPA, which won the Region XIV South Zone championship last season, fell to 1-5 in region play following an 82-80 loss at Bossier. Comeaux had the game high.
“John did a lot of great things against Panola, and he deserves this recognition,” LSCPA coach Lance Madison said in a release. “He performed well under pressure and scored in critical situations, including the last-second basket that gave us the win.”
Comeaux is the fourth Seahawk under Madison to be named national Player of the Week. Current Lamar forward Colton Weisbrod, Mambi Diawara and Tre Bennett also won the honor.
The 47 points against Panola set a school record, beating Bennett’s 45 points against Lee College three years ago.
On Wednesday, West Orange-Stark alumnus Chase Rutledge added 16 points (making four three-point shots), Madit Daniel 13 and Petar Radojicic 12 points and eight rebounds for LSCPA (10-5).
The Seahawks turned to Daniel for the game-winner with 3.4 seconds to go, but BPCC denied him a clean look at the basket as time expired. A half-court three-pointer would not go in for the Seahawks in Monday’s 79-76 loss to Paris.
LSCPA led by double figures in the first half before the Cavaliers chipped away and eventually tied the game with 10 minutes to play. The game see-sawed until J.P. Perry made the go-ahead basket with 9 seconds left.
Next for LSCPA is a home game against Kilgore College at 4 p.m. Saturday.
