Library offers free tech help; Service allows patrons to get 1 hour tech help

For many people, help or advice is often only a mouse click or a tap away.
However, if someone needs help understanding how to even turn on a computer, a mouse click or a tap is out of the question.
Now there is Chelsea Moore.
Moore is the reference librarian and adult programs coordinator with the Port Neches Effie and Wilton Hebert Public Library and she is introducing a set of courses called “Book a Librarian,” wherein anyone can come in with any question or problem and she will try to bring clarity to the issue.
Moore said she had been doing this informally for patrons when they had questions, especially about electronics.
“People could call us and ask us, ‘I’m really confused about how to use my tablet can you sit down with me and help me?,’” she said.
However, she said patrons might like a set, open period for general questions.
“But now it’s both as needed and there are specific designated spots so people can see it on the calendar and know that at 2 p.m. I can go to the library and the reference librarian will be there to help me,” she said.
The first courses are set for Friday at 10 a.m. and at 2 p.m. There will be three other days offered later in the month.
Moore said it would be helpful for people to call first to alert her what they’ll need help with.
She said most of the people who come in are older, and they are first time computer users.
“I’ve had a computer since I was 10 or 11, and these people have not,” she explained. “Many of these people haven’t had a cell phone until they were in their 60s.”
Moore added that she would also help with other things, too. She said the library is a popular starting point for genealogists and she’s happy to help people look up information on loved ones or local history.
In addition, Moore said her schedule is flexible, and so if someone can stop by during the designated Book a Librarian periods, she’s available throughout the day.
“Well, now that it’s officially going to be on the calendar, it will be monthly,” she said. “But I don’t want people to think they only have to choose those four times. If they really need help with something they can call me. … I will do my best to work around their schedules. I’d hate to think they have to get me at those times.”
The Book a Librarian dates are Feb. 3, 7, 17, 28. Times are 2 p.m. and 10 a.m. at 2025 Merriman St. in Port Neches. Call 722-4554 to reserve an hour.
