Better watch where you’re stepping! If not, you might just put your foot on the king of camouflage, the snake that blends in more than any other. I am talking about the southern copperhead. I snapped a photo of this one in Orange County.

These snakes are out on warm days and although they are not as aggressive as they would be during summer, they can still give you a bite.

Copperheads are the most abundant venomous snakes north of Interstate 10 in Orange County, are probably second to the cottonmouth in the same area of Jefferson County and are by far the most numerous in Hardin, Newton, Jasper and Tyler Counties.

These snakes are responsible for more bites than any other in East Texas due to their camouflage and abundance around suburban areas.

If you come across one in the woods, simply leave it alone. They will not come after you but also will not put up with being picked on.
