GROVES — Houston Housing Group LLC has plans to build a 150 unit apartment complex to be located at the very tip of Groves.
Officials with HHG met with the city’s planning and zoning commission recently to discuss their plans for the 5.6 acres of land on the south side of Texas 73 and Texas 87.
The land is currently zoned for commercial and HHG is seeking a specific use permit for the project.
Groves City Manager D. Sosa said the plans include apartments that are not government subsidized.
“According to what we were told rent would start at $1,000,” Sosa said in a phone call prior to Monday’s city council meeting.
HHG, he said, is hoping to target workers coming into the area for upcoming refinery projects over the next two to five years as well as to families.
“It is very important to him (developer) that the apartments are in the Port Neches-Groves school district,” he said.
The property does not have access through nearby neighborhoods; the closest would be Warren Street but that street stops at a dead end.
The three level, 150 unit apartment complex would have a club house and a pool and parking totally around the complex.
City council has set a date for a joint public hearing with the planning and zoning commission regarding the specific use permit. The public hearing will be held during the 5:30 p.m. meeting on March 6 at city hall.
