With Port Neches-Groves ex Braden Bailey one over par through 14 holes, Baylor was in a four-way tie for fifth place when darkness
suspended the opening round of the NCAA Championships Friday at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club in Sugar Grove, Ill.
On a day of stops and starts because of rain delays, 15 of the 30 teams in the field managed to finish 18 holes. Play is scheduled to resume at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, with the second round starting immediately after first-round play is complete.
Bailey got in an early bind with a double bogey 6 on the fourth hole, but had worked himself back to even with birdies at No. 8 and No. 11. He slipped back to one over with a bogey at 14.
Vanderbilt, with all its players still on the course, was the team leader at minus 8. Auburn was in the clubhouse at minus 6. Oklahoma State and Southern Cal were third and fourth, at minus 5 and minus 4, respectively, with holes remaining to play.
Baylor, LSU, UNLV and Illinois were all at minus 3 and will all be on the course for the 6:30 a.m. restart.
Brandon Thornberry of Mississippi was in the clubhouse at the individual leader with a six-under-par 66.
