70-year-old man dies in jail custody

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death of a 70-year-old man who died while in custody at the Jefferson County Correctional facility.

Sunday morning around 6:30 a.m., an inmate in the medical infirmary reported that his bunk mate, age 70, was unresponsive. Jail staff immediately began CPR and notified EMS. They continued CPR until the EMS arrived and took over. The inmate was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased, according to a press release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

An autopsy has been ordered and is expected to be completed some time Monday.

The JSCO will release the inmates name once the autopsy is complete and family notified.

He was currently in custody on the charge of fail to register as a sex offender.
