Nederland agenda to run from streets to fiddles Monday

The City of Nederland will be looking at an agenda Monday as varied as street repairs and famous fiddle players.
“We’re awarding bid on the hot mix job,” Chris Duque, city manager, said in regards to the 2017 hot mix overlay project.
The project will affect the section of Atlanta Avenue between 17th Street and 21st Street and the section of 20th Street between Helena Avenue and Canal Avenue.
“The priority is Atlanta because that’s right by Central Middle School,” Duque said. “They report back the second week of August; they have football and band practices that are going on at school.”
Duque said they are working on completing the hot mix job before the new school year starts.
The council will also be recognizing renowned fiddle player David Varnado with a proclamation from the City.
“The Chief of Police (Darrell Bush) approached us about that,” Duque said. “He’s friends with Mr. Varnado.”
Varnado is the recipient of the 2017 American Fiddlers Association’s Legend Award and has performed with popular country music artists like Loretta Lynn and Vince Gill.
The council will also approve an agreement to provide fire protection services to the Industrial Safety Training Council.
“It’s somewhere right out of city limits; but through contract, we provide fire services for them,” Duque said. “It was done in 2014 and we’re reviewing it for another three years.”
Duque described the rate structure proposed by CenterPoint Energy Resources Corp. and CenterPoint Energy Texas Gas Company’s Gas Reliability Infrastructure Program as “business as usual.”
According to Duque, the preliminary plat of N&P addition on the agenda concerns a piece of property that the City sold to the developer.
Similarly, the minor plat request of lots on the 3200 block of Avenue G involves “land that the City sold through the bid process this spring.”
In regard to the rehabilitation, condemnation and/or the demolition of the abandoned and dilapidated structure at 2423 Nederland Ave., Duque said it was an issue that has been dragged out for a few years.
“We’ll probably have more discussion of the items in closed session,” Duque said.
