SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – The Lamar men’s basketball team made it two wins in as many days when they knocked off McGill University, 57-50, Tuesday evening in Costa Rica. The Cardinals rode a strong defensive effort to the victory.

The stat that is most impressive about Tuesday’s win did not occur in the game. For those unfamiliar with McGill University, the game against the Cardinals was their third in Costa Rica. McGill had split their two previous performances defeating Kent State and pushing SMU to overtime before falling to the Mustangs.

McGill is a public research university located in Montreal, Quebec. Their student enrollment exceeds 40,000 and their athletic teams are known as the Redmen.

Tuesday’s contest was a much closer affair than LU’s first competition in Costa Rica, but the coaching staff prepared for that going in. Big Red proved they were up to the challenge. The Red and White knocked down 39 percent from the field, but struggled a bit from beyond the arc converting just 6-of-21 attempts (.290).

LU also found a decisive advantage on the glass outrebounding the Redmen by 14, 42-28. Seniors Colton Weisbrod and Zjori Bosha led the Cardinals with eight rebounds each.

Although McGill recorded one more field goal (20-53/.380) than LU, and the same number of makes from three-point range, the difference came at the free throw line. The Redmen got to the free throw line just 12 times converting only four attempts.

The Cardinals ended the night with two players in double figures. Sophomore Cameron McGee led all players with 18 points. He also pulled down six rebounds. Weisbrod added 12 for the Red and White. Senior Joey Frenchwood added eight points in 32 minutes of action.

LU’s stifling defense didn’t allow McGill to get in rhythm offensively. The Cards allowed only one player to reach double digits. Noah Daoust led the Redmen with 10 points in nearly 34 minutes of action.

The Cardinals will turn their focus to workouts and team-building exercises before returning to the Golden Triangle on Friday.
