Lamar volleyball falls to Clemson following morning win

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Lamar volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Big Orange Bash on Saturday, earning a 3-1 win over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in the morning before dropping a 3-0 decision to the host Clemson Tigers in the evening.
Murielle Hlavac pounded a match-high 17 kills to lead Cardinals over Bethune-Cookman.
The Cardinals had four players reach double figures in kills as they bounced back after falling 25-23 in the first set to win the next three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-22.
“It’s good to get that first win under our belt,” LU coach Alan Edwards said. “This will definitely help our confidence.”
Amy Hollowell had 12 kills for LU, while Dannisha House and Iyaria Walker added 11 kills apiece in the victory. Zaharia Scott had a match-high 16 digs for LU, while Hlavac had 11 digs. Haley Morton and Molly Shade each contributed 28 assists to the LU triumph.
Jordan Jefferson had 14 kills to lead Bethune-Cookman.
Hlavac had 10 kills against Clemson on 12 attempts for an outstanding .833 attack percentage for the match. However, the Tigers (3-0) had a .424 attack percentage for the contest as they swept the Cardinals (1-2) by scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-15.
Kaitlyn Korte and Kailey Harvell had 10 kills apiece for Clemson.
Following this weekend’s tournament, the Cardinals return home to host the Cardinal Classic at McDonald Gym on Sept. 1-2. The four-team event features LU, Louisiana Tech, Southern and Texas Southern.
