Landry tied for fourth, but Stroud cut again

A strong back nine Saturday kept Andrew Landry in contention during the Web.com Tour’s opening playoff event, while the back nine proved to be Chris Stroud’s undoing at the second stop of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Landry, after stumbling to a 38 on the front nine, rallied with a three-under-par 32 on the back to shoot 70 in the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship on the Scarlett Course at Ohio State. That left him in a four-way tie for fourth at 205, four shots off the 54-hole lead of Ryan Armour.
Stroud, after shooting even-par 71 in the opening round of the Dell Technologies Championship, looked to be in good shape by posting a one-over 36 on his first nine. But a four-putt double bogey on his 10th hole — No. 1 at TPC Boston — proved to be a mishap he couldn’t overcome.
The former PNG and Lamar great shot 3-over 39 on his incoming nine for a 75 and a 146 that missed the cut by one shot. That means his 2016-17 season, highlighted by his first PGA Tour win, is over. He missed a 13-foot birdie putt on the final hole that would have put him on the cut line.
Stroud won’t have too look far for his undoing. He wasted a solid ball-striking round by taking 35 putts. He missed 9 times from inside 15 feet and five times from inside 10 feet. Three of the four putts he took on his 10th hole were inside 4 feet.
Landry, meanwhile, shook off a slow start that saw him make seven pars and two bogeys on the front nine. He started turning things around with a birdie on the par-4 10th, then added birdies at the par-5 12th and the par-4 18th.
The Groves native will be in the second to last group for Sunday’s final round. TV coverage on the Golf Channel is 2 to 4 p.m.
