Mum’s the word for second public hearing on PA tax rate

Nobody spoke in favor or in disfavor of Port Arthur’s proposed ad valorem property tax rate for tax year 2017 during the second public hearing held on the topic Monday morning.

The hearing was part of a special council meeting.

A tax rate of $.792000 per $100 valuation has been proposed for adoption. This rate exceeds the lower of the effective or rollback tax rate, and state law requires that two public hearings be held by the city council before adoption.

The council has until Sept. 29 to approve the tax rate.

In another agenda item, Willie “Bae” Lewis Jr., District 5 councilman, said he wanted to alert the public that when an insurance company totals out a vehicle related to storm water, the car title will be branded and then there’s only 31 days available to turn over to the state or one will be unable to get license plates.
