A tropical depression in the southern Gulf of Mexico is expected to strengthen to a tropical storm by Thursday.

As of Wednesday, the depression was expected to hit Nicaragua, Honduras and possibly the Yucatan Peninsula.

Meteorologists do not expect it to hit Texas. However, meteorologists say the storm system may strike anywhere from eastern Louisiana to Florida.

“That part of the track well have to watch because we don’t know much at this point,” Jared Racklet, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service said on Wednesday.

Racklet said he expects to know more details in the coming days. The storm could touch down late Saturday, and it is expected to gain strength.

Racklet said if it becomes a tropical storm it will be called Nate.

While the storm is not likely to hit Texas directlt, Racklet said it could still bring rain to this part of the state if it impacts central Louisiana.

But, as of noon Wednesday, Racklet said he did not have enough data to make any firm predictions.
