The new composite water tank in Port Arthur was among the top 12 finalists selected during the 2017 Tank of the Year competition sponsored by Tnemec Company, an industry provider of tank coatings. The 2.5-million-gallon elevated water tank was considered for the Tank of the Year crown and will appear with other top finalists in Tnemec’s annual water tank calendar.

“A graphic design of the U.S. Coast Guard emblem appears on the water tank, which is part of the Pleasure Island water distribution system,” explained Doug Hansen, Director – Water Tank Market for Tnemec. “The tank’s exterior was repainted this year with a protective coating system that will extend the life of the structure and provide excellent color and gloss retention.”

Other water tanks among the top 12 finalists for 2017 are in Destin, Florida; Gaffney, South Carolina; St. Cloud, Minnesota; Eden Prairie, Minnesora.; Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada; Sunnyvale, California; Wichita, Kansas; Coopertown, Tennessee; Auburndale, Florida; Lisle, Illinois and Paxton, Illinois.

The finalists were selected from a field of nearly 300 water tanks nominated for the competition. A panel of water tank enthusiasts selected the overall Tank of the Year winner based on criteria such as artistic value, significance of the tank to the community, and challenges encountered during the project. Aside from the official Tank of the Year winner, the tank receiving the most overall votes is designated as the People’s Choice winner.

“This is the 12th anniversary of the competition, which recognizes municipalities for their aesthetic, creative, and innovative uses of exterior coatings on water storage tank projects,” Hansen added. “This year’s finalists represent several different types of water tanks including legged designs, composite constructions, a ground storage tank, and pedestal style in various shapes and sizes.”

This year’s Tank of the Year in the city of Destin, Florida, is a legged water tower featuring a graphic design that reflects the tranquility and beauty of the coastal resort town in the Florida Panhandle. The Gaffney, South Carolina “Peachoid” water tank received the largest number of online votes this year to make it the winner of the People’s Choice category.
