KAPALUA, Hawaii — Chris Stroud shot 1-under par through one round at the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Thursday.

It sure beats dealing with the arctic air on the mainland.

The good start got the Groves native within five strokes of the lead and tied for 17th with four other golfers. Marc Leishman shot 6-under 67, with Brian Harman and Jhonattan Vegas carding 68.

Stroud birdied the fourth, seventh and ninth holes and bogeyed the eighth to go in at 1-under. He birdied again at the 12th, but trouble on the 13th and 15th led to bogeys, and Stroud parred his last three holes to finish 1-under.

Stroud made it to the tournament via his victory at the Barracuda Championship in Nevada in August.
