PREP ROUNDUP: One goal does it for PNG on final day of Cajun Classic

PORT NECHES — The Cajun Classic went well for Port Neches-Groves, especially since they won their final game Saturday.

Ten minutes into the match, Izzy Volk flicked a throw-in with her head to Mackenzie Tindel, who passed to Breeana Riggs for the deciding goal in a 1-0 win over Hardin-Jefferson. PNG won three of four matches, losing 1-0 to 5A Region III top-ranked College Station on Friday.

“I’m proud of our girls and look forward to heading to Georgetown this next weekend,” PNG coach Aimee Bates said.

Libbie LeJeune, Halley Smith, Ariel Muller and Tindel each made the all-tournament team for PNG (5-1-2), which has four shutout wins on the season.

Also Saturday, Port Arthur Memorial fought to a 0-0 tie against Silsbee, and Esme Cruz collected two goals and Jackie Cardenas scored another in Bob Hope’s second shutout win in the Classic, 3-0 over Bridge City.

The Eagles (2-2-1) went 2-1-1 in the three-day Classic, tying Memorial 1-1, beating Pasadena Rayburn 1-0 and losing to Victoria West 4-0.

Memorial will visit Little Cypress-Mauriceville on Tuesday. Bob Hope is scheduled to play in the Cleveland tournament beginning Thursday.

 

TOMBALL 4, NEDERLAND 3

KATY — Nederland took home the runner-up trophy from the Maverick Bracket of the I-10 Shootout on Saturday following a penalty shootout.

Next for the Bulldogs is the Spring tournament, which begins Thursday.

 

BOYS SOCCER

BOB HOPE 7, JASPER 3 (FRI.)

JASPER — Gerardo Figueroa, Fernando Parra and Ricky Perez each scored two goals in the Eagles’ rout of the Bulldogs in the Jasper Winter Classic.

Carlos De La Rosa accounted for Bob Hope’s other goal of the game.

Also Friday, the Eagles tied East Chambers 2-2 and won a penalty shootout 4-3. Figueroa scored both of Bob Hope’s regulation goals, while Juan Hernandez, Brandon Ramirez, Enrique Barrera and Perez scored the shootout goals.

Bob Hope will host PA Memorial at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Gulf Coast Youth Soccer Complex.

 

GALENA PARK 4, NEDERLAND 2

HOUSTON — Jace Mattingly and Uzziel Ulloa accounted for Nederland’s scoring, but the Bulldogs (2-3-1) did not slow down the Yellow Jackets on the final day of the Galena Park Showcase.

Nederland will play in the Waller Showcase, Thursday through Saturday.
