A suspect who was held at bay at Chase Bank by a Groves burglary victim Wednesday has also been charged with the murder of a Sabine Pass man last week.
Raul Aguilar Trejo, 39, was arrested on a charge of forgery related to the Groves incident with bond set at $30,000 for that charge. A second suspect, Josue “Nate” Castillo, was arrested for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle for reportedly stealing the Groves victim’s vehicle; bond was set at $15,000, according to information from the jail.
The unidentified Groves victim had been burglarized and received a call from the bank saying that someone was attempting to pass a stolen check from him. The burglary victim went to the bank armed with a handgun in an attempt to hold the burglary suspects at bay until police arrived. The two suspects fled but were later caught.
On Thursday, Port Arthur police developed enough information to charge Trejo with the Jan. 26 shooting death of Jonah Jarritt Rivera.
Bond for the murder charge was set at $750,000, according to information from police.
According to a probable cause affidavit, officers were sent to a home in the 7500 block of South Fourth Street on Jan. 26 in reference to a home invasion involving three suspects. Because the home is in a rural area of Sabine Pass, witnesses brought the wounded man to the fire station at 5030 South Gulfway Drive in hopes of getting him immediate medical attention for massive facial injuries. Rivera was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries and police learned he had been shot in the mouth.
Witnesses told police Trejo entered Rivera’s home without consent and Rivera approached to protect the occupants of the home. When confronted, Trejo reportedly fired a single gunshot, striking Rivera in the mouth before Trejo and the other suspects left the scene.
Responding officers saw a small passenger vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed leaving Sabine Pass. They pursued the vehicle into Port Arthur and later found it abandoned in the 4500 block of 13th Street. Officers believe this vehicle was connected to the shooting.
No information was available about other suspects in Rivera’s murder Thursday afternoon.
Port Arthur Police Det. Mike Hebert credited cooperation between patrol officers and the criminal investigation division in making an arrest.
