Five homicides were committed in January in Port Arthur, including four of which happened within two days time. The four were unrelated, police say.

The five homicide cases were:

  • 7 at Port Arthur Inn, which involved the shooting death of John M. Sinegal, 45, of Port Arthur. Sinegal and his friend Jeremy Mesa Bell, 32, were at a room at the hotel. Bell had a .410 revolver in his possession, which discharged and shot Sinegal in the chest, court documents say. Bell was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury for manslaughter Jan. 31 as well as for a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
  • On Jan. 25, Jose Pompas Leal, 27, was driving while he was suffering from a gunshot wound, lost consciousness and crashed into other vehicles at a busy intersection at 39th Street and Memorial Boulevard. He died later from his injuries. James Joseph Levron, 25, was arrested in connection with the homicide. Police are continuing their search for a second suspect, David Broadus. Little information has been released by law enforcement about Broadus, 28, but a Facebook search shows a David Broadus listed as a friend on the page of “Levron Jj James.” In addition, there is a David Broadus, 28, listed on the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Sex Offender Registry for two counts of aggravated sexual assault of children in 2004. The offender’s listed address is in Woodville.
  • Later that same night, Kevin Tran, 24, was fatally shot on a porch in the 1300 block of Trinity Avenue. Also shot was Sheldon Polk, 24.
  • Jonah Rivera of Sabine Pass was killed Jan. 26 after he was shot in the mouth at a private residence. Several masked men had gone to the house late that night looking for someone.
  • Around 11:30 p.m. that night, Ervin Michael Johnson, 37, of Port Arthur was killed after he was stabbed in the chest after a dispute with a second person turned physical. Shanga Hudson, 41, was charged with manslaughter.
