GOLF: Stroud tied for 12th; Landry in hunt, too

Published 10:31 pm Thursday, February 22, 2018

In the chase for only his second PGA Tour victory, Chris Stroud finds himself ahead of Tiger Woods by one stroke.

Stroud, though, finds himself three shots behind co-leaders Alex Noren and Webb Simpson through one round of the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, but the 2000 Port Neches-Groves graduate and former Lamar All-American sits in a 13-way tie for 12th place at 1-under 69.

Another PNG alumnus, Andrew Landry, has a chance to make the cut as well after shooting 1-over 71.

Stroud birdied the par-4 fourth hole and stayed under par until a bogey at No. 7. But three more birdies and two bogeys left him with a first-round 69.

Landry was 1-under following the front nine, but a double bogey on No. 16 eventually put him two shots behind Stroud.

Five men are one shot behind Sweden’s Noren and the U.S.’ Simpson.
Second-round coverage will begin at 1 p.m. Central today on Golf Channel. Third-round and fourth-round action will be shown live starting at noon Saturday and Sunday on Golf, with CBS (KFDM-6) taking over at 2 p.m.
