Texas Southern guard Joyce Kennerson of Port Arthur is a player of the week in the Southwestern Athletic Conference for the fourth time this season.

This time, she’s sharing the honor with Shakyla Hill of Texas Southern.

Kennerson received the honor Tuesday after averaging 29.5 points per game in wins over Alabama A&M and Alabama State. The junior, whose 24.7 season average ranks second only to Iowa’s Megan Gustafson in the nation, shot 42 percent from the field and made 78 percent of her free throws during the two games. She had 31 points against Alabama A&M and 28 against Alabama State, making 14 of 17 free throws in the latter.

Kennerson needs just 50 points to become the second-leading scorer in TSU history and surpass Keena Williams (1,583 points from 1983-87). Nerissa Redo (2,221 from 1977-81) is the school’s all-time leader.

TSU closes the regular season with games tonight at Southern and Saturday at Alcorn State. The SWAC tournament begins March 6 with the quarterfinals at the sites of higher-seeded teams and will conclude with the semifinals and finals March 9-10 at Delmar Fieldhouse in Houston.
