POWERLIFTING: Brekel third, Tran fifth in state

Two Nederland powerlifters finished in the top five at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association state meet in Waco on Friday.

Hope Brekel, lifting in the 5A 105-pound class, placed third overall at 660 total pounds, 35 more than at the Region 4 Division I meet. The senior lifted 280 pounds on the squat, bench-pressed 120 pounds and deadlifted 260 pounds.

Catarina Tran, at 114 pounds, was fifth after totaling 725 pounds, matching her regional-winning total. Tran squatted 300 pounds, benched 130 and deadlifted 295.

Nederland came in 18th out of 77 teams in 5A.

The boys’ Texas High School Powerlifting Association meet will be held next Friday at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene. Nederland junior Tien Nguyen and Port Neches-Groves senior Andrew English will compete.
