GALVESTON – Lamar State College Port Arthur played its Saturday-scheduled doubleheader against Galveston College early on Thursday to avoid the bad weather predicted for this weekend.
Unfortunately, the Seahawks were unable to avoid the sweep as the Whitecaps took back-to-back decisions 5-0 and 10-2.
The Hawks fall to 12-20 overall and 5-9 in NJCAA Region XIV play, while the league-leading Whitecaps improve to 23-6 and 13-1.
LSCPA travels to Alvin Community College for a doubleheader today. First pitch for that faceoff is 1 p.m.
In Game 1, the Seahawks managed just three hits in going scoreless in the first game with Cleveland sophomore Ashley May going 2 for 3 and Corpus Christi sophomore Briana White accounting for the other base hit.
Galveston jumped on LSCPA’s pitching quickly, scoring a run in the first inning and four in the second, chasing starter May from the mound after giving up four hits, one a home run.
White finished the final four innings, allowing four hits but no runs, with one walk.
In Game 2, the Seahawks held the Whitecaps close through 3 ½ innings, entering the bottom of the fourth tied 1-1. That’s when Galveston opened up a lead with four runs, adding two more in the fifth and three in the sixth.
LSCPA’s Morgan Chavarria, a sophomore from Bryan, went 1 for 3 with a double, while sophomores Makenzi Maloy and Kaitlyn Stebelton each went 1 for 3 with a run batted in apiece. Bailey Crorey, a freshman, was 1 for 3 with a run scored.
Kelsey Stewart started on the hill for the Seahawks, working 3 1/3 innings, allowing 10 hits for five earned runs. White finished on the mound, giving up four hits and five earned runs over the final two innings.
